How Sports Sunglasses Can Improve Your Game

We work with a lot of athletes (from amateurs to professionals) and help them get the most from their vision. A lot of people don’t realize how impactful a pair of sports eyewear can be, but in reality, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who wears glasses. We hope that this article sheds some light on an important but often overlooked part of your gear.

The inspiration for this article came from a conversation we had with a couple patients the other day. They wore prescription glasses and were looking for a pair of ski goggles that would fit overtop of them. It occurred to us: there are so many people that could benefit from sports goggles but have no idea that they even exist.

Let’s change that.

What Exactly Is “Sports Eyewear”, Anyway?

Think of sports eyewear as application-specific eyewear designed to enhance your performance when you’re out “sporting” (whatever that is, be it golfing, skiing, etc.). Like safety eyewear, sports eyewear comes in a lot of different flavours that range from the traditional to the specialized.

What Most People Think of When They Think of “Sports Eyewear”

A slick pair of Oakley’s are the first thing that come to most people’s mind when they think of “sports eyewear”, and it makes sense: Oakley (and other eyewear companies) have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into branding themselves that way.

They do the job for most people, too; after all, you probably don’t want to get physical when wearing your favourite pair of designer frames. For a lot of people, a pair of prescription sunglasses are sufficient to wear when hitting the slopes or throwing a few balls around, but that’s not quite what we’re referring to.

Wouldn’t You Love a Pair of Prescription Ski Goggles?

Now we’re talking! If you wear glasses and love hitting the slopes, skip a pair of bulky goggles that fit over your glasses and get a pair of goggles with your prescription built-in. Not only will they be more comfortable, but you’ll enjoy corrected vision with all the safety benefits of the goggles already baked in. Bonus!

This is just an example of application-specific eyewear that can make your life a little easier (and a little safer).

They Combine the Best of Safety and Performance

The primary function of any pair of corrective lenses is to enhance your vision and enable you to see clearer. This is true of sports eyewear as well- many brands use lightweight, durable frames paired with prescription lenses.

Something else to consider is safety. When playing baseball, you want to ensure that your eyes are protected. Tens of thousands of eye accidents take place every year that could have been prevented with the right pair of frames.
