Astigmatism is the result of the eye’s physical characteristics. It is quite similar to myopia or hyperopia in that respect, though it is not nearly as common as either.
Where myopia or hyperopia cause vision impairment because they focus light in front or behind the retina, respectively, astigmatism is caused when light does not focus anywhere. This results in a level of vision impairment at all degrees of vision.
Astigmatism Symptoms
Astigmatism is defined by the general blur/vision distortion that is generally not distance specific.
Physical symptoms include:
- Eye strain
- Squinting
- Headaches
- Astigmatism Treatments
Corrective lenses in the form of eyeglasses or contact lenses are the most common treatments. Other options include laser corrective surgery or orthokeratology.
